GCN 10 Components of Lifelong Discipleship — English Transcript

hello I’m Jackie agar and this is
session number 10 in this session we’re
going to be taking a look at the four
part two lifelong discipleship in fact
we call them the four components are the
four boxes I have a piece of paper here
on this piece of paper I drew a simple
box and I put a cross inside the box so
that you can see that there are four
boxes in the larger box please do that
yourself on a piece of paper as you take
notes I think you’ll get a good
understanding of why we call it the four
components are the four boxes of
lifelong discipleship let me begin by
saying discipleship is a marathon it’s a
lifetime journey we as disciples of the
Lord Jesus Christ those who are
committed to walking in his way living
out our lives according to his standards
his values his expectations we realize
also that we are to pour in to those who
follow us our children the children and
youth of our day those that we influence
within our families within our churches
and within the communities in which we
exist we are very serious about
discipleship in fact of all the
children’s ministries that do so many
wonderful things around the world
I believe that global children’s network
and our Malakai kids clubs are uniquely
focused on not just building the bridge
from the church into the home we are
committed to the pastor’s as our
champions as the leaders as the heroes
who will guide the parents in
research guide them to beat successful
disciples of their own children within
their homes and they will do that as
being shepherds and captain’s over their
people the people that God has put into
their care now what about these four
components are these four boxes of
discipleship please understand that
discipleship is more comprehensive more
complex than just simply saying if I
take my kids to church and I get them in
Sunday school for an hour each week that
everything will turn out fine and
they’ll walk with Jesus no we need to
take a hard look at how Jesus did it in
the Gospels in fact I encourage you to
refresh your mind and heart over the
next few months by reading through
Matthew Mark Luke and John and as you
read look especially at Jesus’s
relationship to his heavenly father and
then his relationship to the disciples
that he called in to service let me
remind you that Jesus walked with these
disciples every day all day long and he
did that for over three years can you
imagine the hours he invested just to
build the foundations of their own
spiritual understanding and their
commitment to him by the way on the
night that Jesus was betrayed after
spending over three years with his
disciples training them where were they
they were full of fear they were running
for their lives and they were trying to
disassociate themselves from Jesus after
three years of disciple making that’s
the state they were in yeah that tells
us that discipleship is not to be taken
lightly that it is a
full commitment of your life your soul
your heart and your energy as Moses says
in Deuteronomy chapter 6 so we have four
boxes we have four components let’s take
a look at those four components the
first one is the Bible so if you’ve made
your box with the four boxes inside over
on the left upper side write down Bible
what is it about the Bible that we want
our children to know as we disciples
them well first of all we want them to
learn to read the Bible and we want to
set up a plan ultimately where children
are actually spending some time in the
word each day reading a number of
wonderful tools are available today and
in fact we’re going to make some of
these tools available in our resource
center on our global Children’s Network
org website but we’re going to make sure
that there is a Bible reading plan for
children and their parents and the teams
and and the volunteers in the church so
that perhaps every day they’re reading a
chapter or more from God’s Word so that
we are constantly readers of the word
but we want children to grow beyond that
so that they actually become students of
the word we want them to study God’s
stories we want them to be able to
utilize concordances maybe even online
Bible commentaries and other tools that
can help us understand the scriptures
and the meanings of the Scriptures so
important that we don’t just stop with a
casual reading of the word but we keep
moving our children along so that they
become students of the word so let me
ask you let me ask you dad let me ask
you mom are you a student of the word
are you taking the time to dig and ask
questions what does that passage mean
how can I find out I remember as a
teenager one time in the book of James
chapter 5 I came across this short
little passage that said pray without
ceasing and as a young teenager I
thought how can that be
how can that be how can I pray without
ceasing if I just constantly prayed all
the time I would have no time for
anything except for prayer that was
really bother that really bothered me so
I I went to my pastor which again that’s
why God gives us spiritual leaders in
the church because as we study his word
and we come across things that we don’t
quite understand we can look to those
that are seasoned and mature and have
been in the word for years and they can
help provide guidance for us so I went
to my pastor and I said help me
understand this how is it possible for
me to pray without ceasing and here’s
what he said to me he said look at it
this way God wants you to recognize that
prayer is connecting to him prayer is
communion prayer is aligning with God
and His will for our lives
prayer is reaching out and engaging God
in conversation but more than anything
recognize that God is omnipresent he is
here he is everywhere at the same moment
in fact he said to me Jack he said you
need to practice the presence of the
Lord he’s here recognize it you can talk
to him you can acknowledge his presence
24/7 and that absolutely transformed my
mind and my understanding of the
magnitude the infinite nystagmus of the
God that I serve so the Bible is the
first box we want our kids to read the
Bible we want them to study the Bible we
want them really to love the Bible in
other words by spending time in here
they begin to realize
there are so many amazing stories there
is wisdom to be found here there is
understanding there is guidance that can
come from God’s Word and the next idea
is the word becomes an authority in
their lives the authority what does God
say and whatever challenges that child
faces especially as he or she grows to
be teens and young adults they will
build the life habit of always trusting
God’s Word always going to God’s Word
for answers we will have moral dilemmas
we will have opportunities we will have
difficult days we will have times when
we are you for it because everything is
going so well we will have temptations
in life all of these things God can give
us reasonable direction and it’s always
safe to trust the Lord and that’s one of
the wonderful reasons he gave us his
word and the stories of his word
because they are a lamp for our feet
they’re a light for the path that each
one of us must individually walk so dad
and mom do you want your children to be
on the right path get them into the word
spend some time reading God’s Word with
them studying God’s Word living out
God’s Word loving God’s Word and then
standing under the authority of God’s
Word and doing what God would have us to
do
that’s called obedience that’s what we
want for our kids but we have to show it
out in our lives mom and dad now the
second box if you can take a pen and
just put a dotted lines through the
middle of that box the lower portion of
that box we’re gonna call that Bible
memory the psalmist said in psalm 119
your word have I hid in my heart that I
might not sin against you it is good to
memorize Scripture it’s good for the
brain it it’s good for the heart but
here’s what we need to understand God
doesn’t want us
in putting his words so that it remains
dormant down inside somewhere and we
have this list of verses that we’ve
memorized think about this learning and
memorizing the stories of Scripture is
very much the same as memorizing the
verses themselves but as we memorize
verses God wants us to do the second
part and that’s the word meditate now
the word meditate in the Greek is
ruminate oh it’s a picture of a cow
chewing its cud a cow is sitting down in
the past year and suddenly it brings up
from some grass from one of its stomachs
and it just starts chewing and that’s
the idea that the scriptures share with
us that when we hide God’s word in our
hearts that when we go through trials
and temptations and all kinds of
challenging troubles in life God’s Word
can come right up and as we meditate and
are reminded by the Holy Spirit of God
of these truths that we’ve hidden in our
hearts then you know what they will be
powerful in their influence and in their
dynamic and and what they’re going to be
doing with us each and every day so the
first box it’s the Bible and how we
approach the Bible in our lives the
second part has two parts the lower part
is Bible memory the upper part is Bible
meditation as we ponder as we think on
these things as we meditate on God’s
precious Word all right now the lower
left box on your paper that is prayer
you can even add to that prayer and
intimacy with God walking with God
practicing the presence of Jesus Christ
going through our daily walk with Him do
you ever think about the 10 commandments
many of you may have the Ten
Commandments memorized but you know the
Ten Commandments are given into
the first four commandments have to do
with my relationship to God himself the
next six commandments have to do with my
relationship with others
God really does want us to boldly enter
his presence in prayer in fact he says
in James chapter one if anyone lacks
wisdom let him ask but let him ask in
faith believing that God is able to give
us wisdom and understanding
you see prayer there are different
elements to prayer have you ever taken a
moment to just adore the Lord the prayer
of adoration where you thank God for his
wondrous love for us and what he did for
us how about petition petitioning the
Lord Lord I have a need here would you
help me especially when we petition the
Lord for wisdom and understanding to
help guide us through the minefields and
the difficulties of working with others
in our lives sometimes people can be
very disagreeable and what does the
Bible say how does the Bible teach us to
relate to others well first and foremost
the Bible wants us to understand that
our prayer our connection to God in an
ongoing manner is absolutely essential
and critical for every one of us all
right so the first one the first box is
the Bible the second box is Bible memory
and Bible meditation the third box is
prayer intimacy walking with God the
fourth box is our walk and witness with
others our walk and witness with others
I’ve already shared with you the
importance of being a storyteller a
witness of the Lord Jesus in your life
because you have a story think about
that with me for a moment God wants the
world to know his story and you as a
believer in the Lord Jesus Christ you
have yours
and that is now contained within God’s
story of eternity your story is
important and the story of your faith in
Christ is to be told just like the
stories of the Bible are told so in our
walk and witness how do we conduct our
lives how do we really represent the
hands and the feet and the voices of
Jesus how does a person walk righteously
in an unrighteous world how do we become
light and what does that really mean
here’s what it means we don’t have any
light in and of ourselves it’s really
God who is light but he just that light
descends and it refracts or it bounces
off of us and others begin to see images
of the Lord through our lives and how we
conduct ourselves by walking in holiness
by being righteous in our manners by
being honorable toward other people even
unfriendly people because they too are
made in the image of God how do we
conduct our lives in a manner as
excellent representatives as ambassadors
of the kingdom of God that’s our calling
that’s our high and holy calling from
God so those are the four the four
components of discipleship the Bible
Bible memory and meditation prayer and
intimacy with God my witness and my walk
on a regular daily basis those are the
four components now please understand
this that as we disciple our children
all four of those components are going
to come into play we can teach those
components through the stories and
through the teachings of Scripture but
our children need to also see us living
those things out as examples they need
to see our values on that high and holy
level of God’s very own calling in each
Our Lives God wants you to be his
disciple and as his disciple you can be
then a guide that will always be
pointing children and youth to the Lord
Jesus Christ in your home in your
churches and also in the communities in
which you’ve been called to be light and
salt to the world
